How far each hospital is

Distances below are from our Dorchester apartments, measured direct. Real driving time is longer, and Longwood traffic at shift change is its own event, but the ordering holds.

Four of these hospitals - Brigham and Women's, Boston Children's, Dana-Farber and Beth Israel Deaconess - sit together in the Longwood Medical Area, so a stay near one is a stay near all four.

Before you book anything, call the patient services or social work team at your own hospital. Every one of them keeps a housing list and negotiated rates that are not advertised, and several run free programmes. Those come first. We have written up the free options in full on where to stay for medical treatment in Boston.

Boston Children's Hospital - 3.1 miles

Boston Children's is in the Longwood Medical Area, about 3.1 miles from us and a 19 to 25 minute drive. Ask their patient services team first: families travelling a long distance can often be placed at the Yawkey Family Inn, and Ronald McDonald House Boston Harbor at 700 Brookline Avenue takes families of paediatric patients who live at least 40 miles away. Christopher's Haven and The Boston House both house families whose child is being treated for cancer, siblings included.

Those fill, and they carry conditions. When a sibling needs a bed too, or the stay runs past what a room can hold, a whole apartment with a kitchen and its own laundry is the next honest answer.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute - 3.2 miles

Dana-Farber sits in Longwood, 3.2 miles out. The AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Jamaica Plain, run by the American Cancer Society, gives a cancer patient and one caregiver a free place to stay during treatment - no charge to either of you. Dana-Farber's own patient lodging programme also holds fixed-rate hotel rooms nearby.

Hope Lodge is closer to the hospital than we are and it costs nothing. Take it if they take you. Where we fit is the course of treatment that runs months rather than weeks, or the family who came along and does not qualify.

Brigham and Women's Hospital - 3.0 miles

Brigham and Women's is the closest of the Longwood hospitals to us at 3.0 miles. Their social work team keeps a housing list and negotiated hotel rates that are not published, and The Inn at Longwood Medical sits in the medical district itself with a rate for patients and their families.

Brigham handles a lot of transplant workups, surgical follow-ups and long courses of infusions - the kind of stay where nobody qualifies for the free programmes and a hotel room stops working in the second week.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center - 3.3 miles

Beth Israel Deaconess is the fourth Longwood hospital, 3.3 miles from us. Their patient and family services team can advise on lodging, and Hospitality Homes matches patients and caregivers with host homes and donated apartments across the city regardless of which hospital is treating you.

Because the Longwood hospitals sit within walking distance of one another, a stay booked for Beth Israel works just as well if treatment moves to Brigham, Children's or Dana-Farber partway through. That happens more often than people expect.

Boston Medical Center - 2.7 miles

Boston Medical Center in the South End is the closest major hospital to us, 2.7 miles out and a 15 to 20 minute drive. BMC publishes its own lodging page, and it lists hotels far closer than we are - a Hampton Inn 0.1 miles from the door among them. If you need one night before an early appointment, book that instead.

That same list includes hotels two and three miles out, which tells you the hospital already considers our sort of distance workable. We have written this trip up on its own: apartments near Boston Medical Center.

Tufts Medical Center - 3.8 miles

Tufts Medical Center is in Chinatown, 3.8 miles from us and about fifteen minutes by car outside rush hour - the Red Line runs from Dorchester to Downtown Crossing, a short walk away. Tufts has its own patient and family services team worth calling first, and Hospitality Homes covers Tufts patients as it does the rest.

Downtown hotel pricing is what usually sends people looking further out. Free parking at the door matters more here than anywhere else on this list.

Massachusetts General Hospital - 4.7 miles

Mass General is the furthest of these at 4.7 miles, roughly twenty minutes by car. It is also the best resourced: their patient services team keeps discounted rates at Beacon Hill and Back Bay hotels, and the Liberty Hotel sits on the campus itself.

Those rates are still hotel rates. For a stay measured in weeks - a transplant workup, a long recovery, a family taking turns at the bedside - the arithmetic changes, and a kitchen and a washing machine stop being luxuries.

Why a hotel near the hospital stops working after the first week

A short hospital trip is fine in a hotel room. A long one is not. Treatment plans run for weeks, one person is usually at the hospital while someone else is with the other children, and everybody is tired.

An apartment changes the practical parts. A full kitchen means you can cook to a restricted diet, feed a family without eating out three times a day, and keep normal food in a normal fridge. In-unit laundry matters more than people expect on a stay measured in weeks. Separate bedrooms mean someone coming back at midnight is not waking everyone. And there is a living room to sit in that is not a waiting room.

Parking, and getting in and out

The hospitals themselves handle patient parking better than most people assume - Boston Children's validated patient and family rate is $11 for up to 24 hours, for example. So parking at the hospital is not usually the expensive part.

What we add is a free off-street space at the apartment, so the car is not costing you anything the rest of the day and night, and you are not circling a residential street looking for a spot after a long day.

Practical things worth knowing

Stays here run up to 27 nights, which covers most treatment blocks. If you need longer, tell us and we will work out what is possible rather than making you rebook blindly.

Every apartment is licensed with the City of Boston, so you are booking something legitimate rather than an unregistered listing that could disappear. And you can reach us directly by phone - not a call centre - which matters when plans change at short notice, because with hospital stays they usually do.

Common questions

Where do you stay when going to Boston Children's Hospital?
Most families start with the hospital itself. Boston Children's keeps a housing list, and the Ronald McDonald House and Hospitality Homes place families free or at low cost - ask patient services or social work before you book anything, because those options are never advertised. When they are full, or when the stay runs longer than a hotel room can bear, a whole apartment is the next step: our Dorchester apartments are 3.1 miles from Longwood, a 19 to 25 minute drive, with a kitchen, in-unit laundry and free parking, from a single night up to 27 nights.
Where can families find housing at Boston Children's Hospital?
Start with the hospital's own social work team, who hold the housing list and negotiated rates. The Ronald McDonald House Boston Harbor and Hospitality Homes both house families of patients at no or low cost and are worth asking about first. For stays those cannot cover, families generally choose between a Longwood hotel and a furnished apartment further out; the apartment wins once the stay passes about a week, because of the kitchen, the laundry and parking that does not cost $50 a night.
How long can we stay while a family member is being treated?
Anything from a single night up to 27 nights. Longer stays are common for medical treatment and work placements, and the nightly rate drops as the stay gets longer.
Is there parking at the apartment?
Yes. Every apartment has its own free off-street parking, so you are not paying a garage on top of the stay and you are not circling for a space when you arrive.
Can we cook our own meals?
Yes. Every apartment has a full kitchen and in-unit laundry, which is what makes a long hospital stay affordable - you are not eating out for three weeks.
Do hotels give discounts for hospital patients?
Often, yes - and it is worth asking before you look anywhere else. Boston Medical Center's own lodging page tells patients to mention "Boston Medical Center" when booking, because the hotel may apply a preferred rate. Mass General's patient services team keeps discounted rates at Beacon Hill and Back Bay hotels, and The Inn at Longwood Medical has a rate for patients and their families in the medical district itself. None of these are advertised publicly, so the phone call is the only way to find them. Where a discounted hotel room stops working is the second and third week - that is the gap we are built for.
Are there hotel discounts for families at Boston Children's Hospital?
Ask Boston Children's patient services first. Families travelling a long distance can often be placed at the Yawkey Family Inn, and Ronald McDonald House Boston Harbor at 700 Brookline Avenue takes families of paediatric patients who live at least 40 miles away - both cost far less than a discounted hotel. Christopher's Haven and The Boston House house families whose child is being treated for cancer, siblings included. Take one of those if they take you; they are closer to the ward than we are.
What are the best places to stay near Massachusetts General Hospital?
Mass General is the best resourced of the Boston hospitals for this. Their patient services team holds discounted rates at Beacon Hill and Back Bay hotels, and the Liberty Hotel is on the campus itself. Start there. Our apartments are 4.7 miles out, roughly twenty minutes by car, and make sense when the stay runs into weeks rather than nights - a kitchen and in-unit laundry change the arithmetic that a nightly rate does not.
Are there short term rentals near Boston Children's Hospital?
Yes. We let whole furnished apartments about 3.1 miles from Boston Children's, a 19 to 25 minute drive, from a single night up to 27 nights. That range is the awkward one: too long for a hotel room, too short for the thirty-day minimum most furnished-apartment companies require. Free parking at the door, full kitchen, laundry inside the apartment, and no shared space.
